Come out of the Trench

February 2022. Russia invaded Ukraine. My family is still there. I can’t meet or touch them.
May 2022. I try to activate the memory of my skin and imaging that I touch my mom. I do it daily. A year apart.
September 2022. I got my German residence permit. I stay in Berlin.
March 2023. I don’t have people to dance with, so I made choreography for myself and nine projections of me. Now I am a collective. Masha helped with the footage. Legions want to turn my singing into a choir. 2 years apart.
May 2024. 3 years apart. Depression hits. I passed an open call at Berliner Ringtheater.
April 2025. 4 years apart. The premiere is coming soon.

“Come Out of the Trench” is a performance developed over the past three years by Ukrainian performance artist Andrii Romanenko, in collaboration with his colleagues Masha Shalagina and Legions Nonbinaryrussia. Through this work, the artists reflect on the topic of distance and lived experience of a body in exile. They expand a refugee body into a performative landscape, multiply and distort it, using sound, movement and projections. The performance invites the audience not only to see the result, but also the process behind it — an often overlooked space where something deeply human unfolds.
