MKT#12 Beyond Molotovs: Workshop

In dieser zweiteiligen Ausgabe unserer Reihe „Macht kritisch(es) Theater“ sprechen wir über die affektiven Strategien des Autoritarismus und mögliche Gegenstrategien im Theater, auf Festivals, in der Kunst. Zwei Formate – Workshop und Panel-Diskussion – laden zu einem Erfahrungsaustausch darüber ein, wie wir auf und hinter der Bühne handlungsmächtig werden können.

Nationalistische, militaristische, antifeministische, antisemitische, rassistische und koloniale Weltbilder haben wieder Aufwind. Demokratien weltweit – und auch hier in Deutschland – stehen unter Druck. Wir erleben eine gesellschaftliche Verschiebung ins Autoritäre, die auch vor der Kunstfreiheit nicht halt macht und versucht, Diskursräume zu polarisieren oder ganz zu schließen. Autoritarismus funktioniert eher auf der Gefühlsebene als auf der Ebene der Argumente. Wie können wir autoritären Affekten entgegenwirken? Bisher verlässt sich der demokratische Diskurs zumeist und aus guten Gründen auf rationale Argumente. Doch Fakten allein scheinen gegen emotionalisierende Narrative und die Macht der Gefühle derzeit kaum noch anzukommen. Im politischen Theater wissen wir, dass sich demokratisches Engagement auch aus ästhetischen und Empathie stiftenden Schlüsselerfahrungen speist. 

Bei einem Workshop (auf deutsch) und auf einer anschließenden Paneldiskussion (auf Englisch) wollen wir theatrale und künstlerische Strategien kartieren, die den autoritären Versprechungen dort begegnen, wo sie am stärksten wirken: der emotionalen und affektiven Ebene.

Bei dem Workshop mit Tuline Gülgönen (Mitglied des Kollektivs Ecologías del Futuro und von orangotango – Kollektiv für kritische Bildung und kreativen Protest) und Aurel Eschmann (Mitherausgeber des Sammelbandes „Beyond Molotovs – A Visual Handbook of Anti-Authoritarian Strategies“), suchen wir bei kollektiven Kartierungen und in verschiedenen Austauschformaten gemeinsam nach bestehenden und zukünftigen antiautoritären Strategien. Der Sammelband bietet über 50 Erfahrungsberichte von antiautoritären Bewegungen, Aktivist*innen, Künstler*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen aus aller Welt, die sich auf die ästhetische Dimension ihrer Strategien konzentrieren. Wir wollen darüber nachdenken, welche Rolle Affekte und Emotionen, aber auch Theater und Kunstpraxis für politische Strategien spielen. Nach einer Mittagspause werden wir das fortlaufende Projekt AntifaTarots über antiautoritäre Strategien von Tuline und Francesca Cogni (Filmemacherin und Illustratorin) kennenlernen und eigene Karten hinzufügen. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte und überall auf der Welt gab es Tausende von Möglichkeiten, sich gegen Unterdrückung zu wehren und andere Formen des Zusammenseins und der Organisierung zu entwickeln. Welche sind für uns am sinnvollsten, welche wollen wir in unserem Werkzeugkasten behalten und mit in die Zukunft nehmen?

In this two-part edition of our series “Macht kritisch(es) Theater”, we focus on the affective strategies of authoritarianism and on possible counter-strategies in theatre, at festivals, and in the arts. Through two formats, a workshop and a panel discussion, we invite participants to share experiences and reflect together on how we can become more capable of taking action, both onstage and behind the scenes.

Nationalist, militarist, antifeminist, antisemitic, racist, and colonial worldviews are gaining ground once again. Democracies across the world – including here in Germany – are under increasing pressure. We are witnessing a broader societal shift toward authoritarianism, one that also threatens artistic freedom and seeks to polarize or entirely shut down spaces of public discourse. Authoritarianism works less through argument than through emotion. How can we respond to authoritarian affects? Democratic discourse has so far tended to rely, for good reasons, on rational argument. Yet facts alone currently seem to have little effect against emotionally charged narratives and the power of feeling. In political theatre, we know that democratic engagement can also emerge from aesthetic experiences and moments that generate empathy.

In a workshop followed by a panel discussion, we will explore theatrical and artistic strategies that address authoritarian promises precisely where they are most effective: on the emotional and affective level.

In this workshop with Tuline Gülgönen, member of the collectives Ecologías del Futuro and orangotango – Collective for Critical Education and Creative Protest, and Aurel Eschmann, co-editor of “Beyond Molotovs – A Visual Handbook of Anti-Authoritarian Strategies”, we will use collective mapping and different exchange formats to explore existing and future anti-authoritarian strategies together. The edited volume brings together more than 50 first-hand accounts from anti-authoritarian movements, activists, artists, and scholars around the world, with a focus on the aesthetic dimensions of their strategies. We will reflect on the role that affects and emotions – as well as theatre and artistic practice – can play in political strategy.

After a lunch break, we will introduce the ongoing project AntifaTarots, developed by Tuline and filmmaker and illustrator Francesca Cogni, which explores anti-authoritarian strategies through tarot-inspired cards. Participants will then have the opportunity to add their own cards. Across centuries and around the world, people have found countless ways to resist oppression and develop other forms of being together and organizing. Which of these strategies are most meaningful to us? Which ones do we want to keep in our toolbox and carry into the future?
